Recent weeks have seen a surge in demand for Covid-19 tests across the U.S., fueled in large part by President Biden’s mandate for weekly testing for unvaccinated employees at businesses with more than 100 employees. Specifically, employers are looking for the Rapid Antigen test, which yields results in minutes and can be administered almost anywhere including in clinics, pharmacies, offices, and at home.
An antigen is defined as something that is considered infectious. When there are antigens in your body, your immune system will respond by fighting them. The Rapid Antigen test for Covid-19 identifies the presence of the SARS-CoV2 by detecting protein fragments that are specific to that virus.
A sterile nasal swab is used to collect fluid from both nostrils for analysis. This is usually self-administered. The results are then analyzed on-site, with results often in less than 30 minutes.
Positive results are considered to be very accurate, especially for people showing symptoms. But no test is perfect and there is always a chance for false-negative results with the Antigen test. It is recommended that people with symptoms who test negative after a rapid test follow up with a PCR test.
